Amazon, Warren Buffett, JP Morgan; will the trio deliver the next paradigm shift in healthcare?
Not much is known about the announced new independent healthcare company to be created by Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase but it seems to have already impacted the stocks of major insurers and health companies.
It seems that the goal is to build a non profit making entity focussing on the existing 950,000 employees of the companies as well as "on technology solutions that will provide U.S. employees and their families simplified, high-quality and transparent healthcare at a reasonable cost". It has been reported that the new company will leverage on the combined access to data about how consumers make choices and the existing understanding of how health insurance works.
Other corporations have attempted in the past to lower healthcare costs (bundling purchases, cutting out the middleman), but none with any major apparent success. Google and Microsoft were among the giant tech companies that ventured into health business some years ago with minimum success.
Given healthcare is a highly regulated and complex industry, it takes more than money and technology to revolutionize the decades-old business models but any new initiative should be closely followed to see what could be learned from it.
