Taking the plunge: study shows true benefits of HIE in reducing healthcare utilisation and costs
Health information exchange (HIE) has become a priority for many countries and health organisations. This progress was made on the theoretical promise that HIE could improve care quality and reduce costs.
Previous scientific studies into real-life implementation of HIE showed a mixture of risks and benefits. The lack of consistency in showing benefits instilsed hesitancy in many organisations to take the plunge into HIE compared with the high investments required.
A recent systematic review of HIE (1) put such doubts to rest. Led by Prof. Menachemi, the study examined 24 previous studies including 63 HIE analysis and concluded that HIE is indeed beneficial: fewer duplicated procedures, reduced imaging needs, lower costs in general, and improved patient safety.
This represents an important milestone towards the goal of seamless exchange of health information, and “in support of the triple aim of better quality, improved population health, and lower costs,” according to the paper.
